420 with CNW — Bipartisan Lawmakers Express Concern About Persisting Barriers to Marijuana Research

Two bipartisan Congress lawmakers have expressed serious concerns about the slow progress in implementing a measure that President Joseph Biden signed into law aimed at simplifying cannabis research procedures. Representatives Andy Harris from Maryland and Earl Blumenauer from Oregon sent a letter to the heads of the U.S. Health and Human Services (HHS) and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) seeking clarification on how marijuana research should be facilitated under the Medical Marijuana and Cannabidiol Research Expansion Act signed into law by the president in 2022. Harris and Blumenauer, despite their differing views on more general marijuana policy matters, collaborated…

Reports Suggest DEA Resisting Pressure from White House to Reclassify Marijuana

According to a recently published article, some Drug Enforcement Administration officials may be resisting calls to move cannabis to a lower schedule. This has created tension with the White House, especially as the president continues to laud his role in spearheading the marijuana review. Certain officials appear to be contesting scientific findings from the U.S. Health and Human Services, which were the basis of the department’s recommendation that cannabis be resclassified under the Controlled Substances Act. The article highlights that the officials are concerned about issues linked to THC potency and are still not convinced by the conclusion made by…

New research has challenged the stereotype that cannabis users are lazy and inactive. The research was conducted by investigators at The Ohio University and the University of Texas at Dallas and involved more than 2,500 adults who took part in the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health in the period between 2016 to 2018. Could Marijuana Hold Key to Addressing Pain Related to Aging?

Marijuana contains more than 100 compounds, the major ones being tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). Of the two primary compounds, THC induces a high when consumed while CBD does not. Research has found that some of marijuana’s compounds safeguard the brain’s neurons. Some of marijuana’s antioxidant properties can also fight oxidative stress, which influences aging. Oxidative stress refers to a disruption in the balance between antioxidant defenses and the production of free radicals in the body. With regard to aging, age-related decreases in physiologic functions are caused by an accumulation of oxidative damage to macromolecules. This, researchers believe, increases with…

Study Shows CBD-Dominant Marijuana Products Can Ease Anxiety While Negating Risks of THC

A new study has found that marijuana products dominant in CBD can ease anxiety more effectively in comparison to products that contain THC. THC and CBD are the two primary compounds found in marijuana. However, unlike CBD, THC induces a high when ingested. The study was carried out by researchers at CU Boulder. It is the first randomized trial to investigate how commercially available marijuana influences symptoms of anxiety. Currently, one in five adults in America have an anxiety disorder, which makes it a common mental health condition in the United States. The researchers’ primary objective was to better understand…

Germany Approves a Quasi-Legalization Marijuana Law

Germany recently passed a recreational marijuana legislation that decriminalizes marijuana, provides a foundation for cultivation social clubs and permits home growing. Under the legislation, cultivation social clubs are defined as not-for-profit organizations that allow members to obtain cannabis for recreational use. The law, which hasn’t yet been read in the Bundesrat, will be enacted on April 1, 2024. The Bundesrat isn’t required to provide “consent” and will focus more on looking into the measure itself. However, if it does summon the Mediation Committee, then the measure may not go into effect in April as is expected. Bloomwell Group’s CEO and…
