Cannabis Industry Perplexed as Feds Seize Marijuana from State-Legal Businesses

In the last two months, federal officials have seized hundreds of pounds of cannabis intended for retail sale from state-licensed businesses in New Mexico. This is in addition to detaining workers in the industry in what appears to be an escalation of enforcement of prohibition at the national level. This is despite the fact that the federal government has thus far avoided interfering with the implementation of legalization laws at the state level. Reports from cannabis businesses in the state show that more than 12 seizures by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) have occurred, particularly at checkpoints inside the…

Court Overturns New York’s Cannabis Advertising Ban

Last week, an Albany judge overturned New York’s rules on marijuana advertising and marketing. In his ruling, Judge Kevin Bryant stated that the rules were a violation of free speech and commerce. This ruling throws the state’s already struggling legal marijuana industry into confusion. In 2023, the state was prevented from issuing licenses to new marijuana shops for months, which left many shops unopened and allowed unlicensed retailers to operate across the city. In his 13-page ruling, Judge Bryant explained that the Office of Cannabis Management (OCM) published regulations outlawing marketing and promotions on third-party platforms with no evidence to…

Germans Turn Up Heat in Demanding Adult-Use Cannabis Sales Regulations

Legislators in Germany are focused on creating a pilot program for the commercial sale of marijuana. This comes after the country legalized the possession and cultivation of marijuana for personal use last week. Under the new law, social clubs where individuals could join and acquire cannabis are set for launch in July. In its statement, the Federal Ministry of Health stated that preparation work on the next pillar of the marijuana laws was underway with relevant departments. He also noted, however, that no specifics cold be shared at the time. Karl Lauterbach, the health minister who has championed for marijuana…

Poll Finds 60% of Americans Want Cannabis Homegrow Allowed

A new poll has found that almost every three in five individuals in the United States are in favor of home growing marijuana. The poll, which was commissioned by Royal Queen Seeds, found that more than 60% of cannabis consumers aged 21 years and older preferred to grow their own plants instead of purchasing marijuana. While this isn’t the first or second poll that observed strong support for cannabis legalization overall, it is one of the few that looked into preferences on home growing. In its findings, the survey determined that 59% of grownups believed individuals should have the right…

This is despite opposition from the Christian Democrats and some federal states in the country. Friedrich Merz, leader of the center-right Christian Democrats, vowed…

Congressional Lawmakers Urge AG to End Current Legal Limbo, Issue ‘Overdue’ Cannabis Guidance

Congressional legislators recently forwarded a letter to the attorney general (AG), urging him to issue guidance on federal cannabis enforcement in an effort to stave off interference in state marijuana programs. The letter, penned by Congressional Cannabis Caucus cochairs Representatives Barbara Lee and Earl Blumenauer, stated that the department of justice needed to correct this oversight and issue a memo clarifying that its resources wouldn’t be used to prosecute parties acting in accordance with tribal or state law. It has been more than five years since former AG Jeff Sessions revoked the previous memos that directed prosecutors to not interfere…

Canadian Law Review Panel Recommends Allowing Cannabis in Pharmacies

A panel reviewing Canadian law on adult-use marijuana has recommended that pharmacy access be enabled for medical cannabis. This comes after Shoppers Drug Mart, the biggest pharmacy chain in the nation, requested that pharmacies be allowed to sell medical marijuana products. By doing so, patient concerns on product shortages and delays in delivery could be addressed. Additionally, enabling this access would allow patients to freely consult with pharmacists on side effects and drug interactions at their own convenience. The Cannabis Act, which legalized recreational marijuana, established a legal framework for producing, distributing, selling and possessing marijuana across Canada. The panel,…

Scientific Review Finds Potential for CBD to Manage AUD Symptoms

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a condition characterized by the impaired ability to control or stop the use of alcohol despite adverse health, occupational or social consequences. A recent scientific review on cannabidiol (CBD) and its effects suggests that the compound may help manage symptoms of alcohol use disorder. CBD is one of the two primary compounds found in the marijuana plant, the other being tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Unlike THC, CBD doesn’t induce a high when ingested. The nonpsychoactive compound does, however, possess antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. The review was carried out by local health districts in Sydney and researchers at…

Survey Finds 7 in 10 Canadians Buy Cannabis from Legal Sources

A recently conducted survey has determined that the number of Canadians purchasing marijuana legally has increased. Data published by Statistics Canada earlier this month shows that more than two-thirds of marijuana consumers are buying the drug legally. The survey received responses from 5,185 adults 25 to 44 years of age and 2,251 individuals aged 18 to 24. It determined that within the last 12 months, almost 72% of those surveyed exclusively purchased marijuana from legal markets. When queried why they bought from legal sources, 38% of respondents stated that they did so because of product safety, nearly 13% wanted to…

Companies Sue Federal Government, Saying Cannabis Prohibition Isn’t Premised on Rationality

A recently filed lawsuit argues that the ongoing prohibition of marijuana has no rational basis. The lawyers representing a group of cannabis companies have based their argument on the federal government’s current approach on the matter. They argue that legislators and the executive branch have deserted their mission to eliminate illegal interstate commerce of marijuana, which was enforced with the establishment of the Controlled Substances Act. The lawyers note that with more states legalizing and regulating recreational and/or medical marijuana and offering consumers safe and local access to the drug, they are actively decreasing illegal interstate commerce as more individuals…
