There has been a significant growth in both the THC potency and range of cannabis products in recent decades, according to recent research by the University of Mississippi’s School of Pharmacy. The study, conducted through the university’s Natural Center for Natural Products Research, involved testing marijuana samples seized in federal raids during the last 50 years. The findings reveal a significant increase in potency, with modern cannabis flower being 57%–67% stronger compared to those from the 1970s.
Since legalization in most states, such as Michigan, the cannabis market has undergone strict regulation and has expanded to provide users with even more potent products. Tyler Dutcher, who owns Barryton-based grow facility Vivid Farms, acknowledges the availability of highly potent products but also emphasizes the presence of lower dosage varieties to cater to different preferences.
Dutcher advises beginning with goods such as flower strains or infused edibles that have about 20% potency and progressively modifying the dosage according to personal tolerance. He notes that taking these products will give users greater control over their dosage.
Recent studies have investigated the link between cannabis use and psychosis, with The New York Times reporting on the risks associated with regular marijuana use, especially among teenagers and young adults. Another study published in the Missouri State Medical Association Journal in 2018 revealed that high-potency THC (greater than 15%) increased the psychosis risk threefold, with daily use leading to a fivefold increase in risk among individuals under the age of 18 years.
Timber Cannabis marketing representative Chivonne Rush notes that regulated dispensaries prioritize only adult cannabis use and are committed to educating consumers about the potential risks associated with marijuana use, particularly among youth. According to the Addiction Center, higher THC levels in marijuana products increase the likelihood of addiction and dependence. The organization noted that it is critical to find and carry out efficient treatment programs for people struggling with addiction disorders and that it is also critical to raise youth awareness of the risks and hazards that come with using these substances.
Dutcher advocates starting with smaller doses and being watchful for any unpleasant effects when it comes to intake, especially for nonregular users. He reassures that although some people may experience discomfort from consuming strong cannabis, major injury is unlikely and that education from trained staff at cannabis dispensaries is essential to encouraging appropriate consumption habits.
Given that marijuana industry actors have to compete with black-market products, the subject of the rising potency of cannabis products is more nuanced than one may initially think.
